Welcome to 2019 with the Adelaide Youth Orchestras.

There are few things in this world as life-affirming as great music. Moments when we feel transported, when we transcend the everyday and time seems to stop. One moment it can be entertaining and fun, and the next, cathartic and renewing. Adelaide Youth Orchestras is keen to share the full range of music’s power with you in the 2019 season.

All-time favourite composers Beethoven and Rachmaninov feature along with works from Australians Richard Meale and Miriam Hyde. Her Happy Occasion Overture was written for the first performance ever given by the Australian Youth Orchestra in 1957. Young talent shines again this year as we introduce virtuoso violinist Ji Won Kim in Lalo’s seductive Symphonie Espagnole and three of our young members who step into the limelight to share a concerto with you. Finally, our Gala concert – Pageantry, promises to
be one of our most exciting as we bring to it the atmosphere of a Last Night of the Proms.

AdYO’s yearly program motivates our student musicians from diverse social and cultural backgrounds to achieve excellence in performance and a life-long love of music. Weekly rehearsals, coaching and tutorials by leading musicians, as well as a powerful outreach program through regional and metropolitan schools, senior heroes and community concerts along with other special arts activities provide musically rich, personally rewarding, and uniquely stimulating experiences.

A special thank you to our generous supporters – the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation, the RAA, Klein Family Foundation, The Advertiser, Day Family Foundation, Fisher Jeffries and Alfred James for their continuing and valuable contributions. Together with AdYO’s staff and our extended family of parents, volunteers and donors, they make this organisation truly outstanding. Above all, I thank our talented young musicians for their commitment, hard work and unqualified enthusiasm. I am so proud of them. From the youngest member of Adelaide Youth Strings through the Adelaide Youth Wind Orchestra and Adelaide Youth Sinfonia to the senior Adelaide Youth Orchestra, our musicians have the singular ability to engage an audience.

The energy and sheer joy of a youth orchestra concert is not easily forgotten.

Make sure you don’t miss our exhilarating 2019 season.
